About
I am a field palaeoanthropologist, archaeomagnetist (palaeomagnetism) and geochronologist primarily working in the field of Human Evolution and Palaeolithic Archaeology. I run the Australian Archaeomagnetism Laboratory.
I work on sites ranging from Australopithecus to the Later Stone Age in Africa (S. Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia), modern human origins in China and Australia and even the Bronze Age and Iron age of Bulgaria.
I specialise in caves and also have a number of projects working on reconstructing climate and geomagnetic field change in speleothems from around the world. I also specialise in the excavation of logistically challenging sites that require rope access.
Over the past 10 years (or so) I have developed the use of magnetic techniques (palaeomagnetism, mineral magnetism) in archaeology, palaeoanthropology, palaeontology and speleology. These cover magnetostratigraphy and cross correlation of geochronological techniques, environmental reconstruction, sediment sourcing, archaeometry and behavioural studies particulalry related to fire use and spatial patterning.
